My Favorite Place
My favorite place, the Keweenaw Peninsula. There’s a lot of amazing places in the world, but this one tops the charts because for a period of time, I got to call it home. It’s been almost three years since I lived in Houghton, but I still miss it often. It is so peaceful, serene, and secluded.
Last fall, I had the perfect excuse to visit – a wedding! Since we didn’t book a hotel in time, we also had the perfect excuse to try an adorable bed and breakfast, the Sheridan on the Lake B&B! I traveled from Wisconsin and Austin came from downstate Michigan. My fabulous friend Jane was living in Houghton at the time, so we got to visit her too!
I pulled up to the bed and breakfast and Austin came to greet me… his first words to me were, “Your car is smoking.” As it turns out, when I had work done on my car the previous day, the auto place forgot to put the dipstick back into my car. After driving 250+ miles without it, we opened the hood to my car and there was OIL EVERYWHERE. In my defense, you couldn’t see any symptoms of a problem while I was driving! Anyway, Austin was able to sort all of that out (what a guy!) and we were able to enjoy the rest of the weekend (until his car broke down).
We saw a BEAR on Brockway Mountain and visited lots of our favorite spots – Roy’s Bakery, the Jampot, and Suomi’s! After all of this, we scrambled to get ready for the wedding! As we drove on the dusty back roads, Austin’s power steering went out a couple of miles from our destination and we had to abandon ship. A nice couple stopped by and offered to give us a ride, and so we hitchhiked the rest of the way there (the only place in the world I would do this – another reason why I love the Keweenaw!)
I ended the day in our amazing little B&B, eating a McDonald’s Happy Meal in bed. You know what they say – all’s well that ends well!

So much effort to take a nice photo together!

Coolest girl I know. Hands. Down.

Sheridan on the Lake! Highly recommend this bed and breakfast!
SO difficult to take a selfie with a DSLR! This was the best we could do!
The last I ever saw of Austin’s car… Just kidding, he got it fixed! (And then upgraded to a new vehicle a couple months later. )
This weekend ended up being more eventful than I would have liked but in the end, it’s these weekends that are the most memorable. :)
